Morehead-Cain Scholars from UNC-Chapel Hill serve as interns for the Town of Black Mountain

This summer, five students from the Morehead-Cain Scholars Program at UNC-Chapel Hill interned with the Town of Black Mountain.

“It’s been wonderful to have thoughtful, hardworking students from the Morehead-Cain program this summer,” said Assistant Town Manager Jessica Trotman. “Their primary task was to develop a record of the Town’s response to Tropical Storm Helene. The purpose is to provide historical documents the Town can continue to use as we learn from this experience and contribute to the historical record of this event that has left its mark on not only the people who live here, but also on those who have developed their work to make Black Mountain a wonderful and thriving community.”

The Morehead-Cain Scholar Program at UNC-Chapel Hill is a prestigious, fully funded undergraduate scholarship that develops future leaders through academic support, global experiences, and intensive summer enrichment in leadership, service, and professional growth.

When asked about their experience, the scholars stated “It has been eye-opening to live and work within a town where people care so deeply for one another. Witnessing the effort and care the Town staff pours into making Black Mountain a wonderful home and place to visit each day has been inspiring. We have felt so welcome in this community and honored that so many people were willing to share their stories with us. It has been wonderful to live in such a beautiful place for the summer and we each hope to take a little bit of the resilient spirit and love of Black Mountain and WNC back with us to Chapel Hill in the fall.”
