Is your property in a flood-prone area? Prepare now.

Hurricane season is underway. It’s important to remember that flooding can happen fast, even without a named storm. In Western North Carolina, short but intense rain events can cause flash flooding and significant property damage.

Know your risk: Is your property in a flood-prone area? Check FEMA flood maps at msc.fema.gov.

Additionally, are some tips to help mitigate flood risks and get prepared.

Keep streams clear

  • Don’t store anything near creeks, streams, or rivers—not firewood, not furniture, not trash cans.

  • In a storm, these items can become dangerous debris and block culverts, making flooding worse.

  • Keep water flowing and neighbors safe.

  • Every small action helps prevent big damage.

Simple flood prevention at home

Flood mitigation starts at home. Completing a few simple weekend projects now can help reduce the risk of water getting into your house later, such as:

  • Clean your gutters and downspouts.

  • Extend drain pipes 6–10 feet from the foundation.

  • Slope soil away from your home.
